5 Room Style, ca. 1916-17
The second of the two 1916-17 floorplans, this house added a room which almost squared up the back ell and created a 5-room house. This is the most spacious floorplan in the Mill Village, providing over 1500 square feet of living space. This pattern is found exclusively on East Wilson Avenue. Dr. William Brown, who wrote the book "Around These Tracks," lived with his parents and grandparents in one of these houses.
A 7' central hallway of this design allowed entrance to two rooms on one side, three on the other. The house was warmed by two double-sided fireplaces.
Folk legend has it that the larger five room houses of East Wilson were for the managers and foremen of the mill. In reality, these houses were mostly rented to those with enough working members in the family or sub-letters to pay the extra room's rent.
